Kuta and Legian beach
Accomodations at Kuta Bali
The Kuta area has thousands of rooms, ranging from tiny concrete boxes in a Balinese family compound deep in the back lanes to the super-luxurious The Legian and the Oberoi to the north. The choice of where to base yourself is relatively easy: if you want action, stay in Kuta; if you want relative quite, try Canggu; if you want a mix, stay in Seminyak, and if you want top-end luxury, head for Tubanin the south or Petitenget in the north. Each area has advantages and dis-advantages. The main hassle north of Canggu is a lack of public transport.

The best way to find a room that suits you is to shop around. Grab almost any old place the first night, then hit the ground the next morning and upgrade yourself. If you're in a hurry, you can book through the hotel association counter at the airport. The recommendation on the following pages are intended to give some points of reference.
Hotels are often fully-booked during the peak season (Christmas-New Year and July-August), so make a reservation for a day or two and look around if the hotel is not to your liking. In the low season most hotels offer discounts of up to 15 or even 30%. Since the Bali and Jakarta bombs, the bird flu epidemic and subsequent downturn in tourism, discounts as steep as 15-30% are routinely given. As part of your bargaining stance, request that children under 12 sharing their parents' room be allowed free of charge.
Budget
There are literally hundreds of losmen or home-stay “inns” scattered about the Kuta, Legian and Seminyak areas where rooms rent. The rooms are basic, usually concrete locks thrown up in a family compound. A breakfast of fruit salad or toast and tea or coffee is almost always included. For a bit more money, you can get larger room or private bungalow with AC nearer the beach. Rates are negotiable, particularly in the off-season (September-June) and for longer stays.
Moderate
Kuta and Legian have a tremendous range of intermediated priced accommodations, many offering the same or better facilities then those charging first-class rates. Almost all have AC, swimming pool and hot water. The difference is that these hotels are smaller with fewer sports facilities and tourist services. A simple breakfast is often included (toast, fruit, tea/coffee). Most rates are subject to 21% tax / service charge.
Intermediate
Most places in this category feature clusters of bungalows near the beach. Includes a number of larger hotels with two and three story blocks with AC, hot water and upgraded facilities. Beer in mind that / KITABKITAS holders (permanent residents or those with work permits) and Indonesian citizens are given discounts of at least 30%.
First Class
For peace and quite, stay at one of these elegant, sophisticated and stylish resorts with extensive gardens, often overlooking the sea. All rooms have AC, private bathrooms, hot water, IDD and room services. Rates do not include breakfast or the 21% tax and service charges.
Luxury
A great number of upmarket properties have opened their doors in Kuta – it's not just a budget traveler's or yuppie backpacker's place any longer. Rates given here do not include the 21% tax and service charge, but often include a buffet breakfast.
