Only 60 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport, Ubud Bali is close to many of central Bali's major historic and cultural sights. Although visitors may outnumber residents during the peak periods of June and July, at other times Ubud Bali retains the atmosphere of a small country town and, in contrast to the hustle of Kuta, the pace of life can be very relaxed. It's great place to tour on foot or by bicycle and there's wide range of facilities for tourists of all budgets. ORIENTATION
The main crossroads in front of the Puri Saren palace is the “navel” of Ubud Bali – its cultural, historical and commercial focal point. The main street, Jl. Raya Ubud, is lined with restaurants, mini-markets, shops and galleries, stretching all the way from the T-junction at the eastern end of Ubud Bali to the Campuhan Bridge in the west. Small lanes with homestays, hotels, warungs, souvenir shops and Balinese compounds extend north and south from the main road. Jl. Monkey Forest, branching south from “downtown” Ubud Bali is lined with hotels, restaurants, cafes, artists' studios, and boutiques for a distance of some 2 km. A parallel road south, Jl. Hanoman, just to the east from Padangtegal is similar, though less congested. Away from this main streets, Ubud Bali is still relatively quiet. Roads radiate west out of the main town to Campuhan and Payangan, south to Batuan and Pengosekan and east to Goa Gajah. Bemos can be flagged down in the daytime on the main road.

GETTING TO UBUD BALI
Ubud is 60 minutes by car from the airport and southern beach resort areas and 40 minutes from Sanur. Look for the taxi window at the airport: turn left after emerging from both the international and domestic terminals. Alternatively, charter (and bargain vigorously for) a bemo outside the airport gates. From Denpasar, take a bemo from Kereneng Terminal to Batubulan Terminal, then transfer to Ubud. Alternatively, hop on one of the many shuttle buses which depart Kuta for Ubud at 6, 10 and 1:30 am, 4:30 am.
